Top Reasons Why I Started an Online Business From Home

Why I Started an Online Business From Home

Hello all..

When thinking about starting an online business from home, we sometimes forget to think about the reasons why we would want to do such a thing – apart from earning an extra income from the internet.

I mean, we all have an entrepreneur mindset and we all want to make money online, but I often ask myself the real reasons why I do this, and why I did this in the first place.. so I came up with a list that I’d like to share with you. Perhaps you have the same motivations as I do.

Off the top of my head, here are my top 6 reasons:

1. FREEDOM. This is kind of a tricky one, because having a home business can absolutely give you the freedom that you wouldn’t get from an ‘ordinary’ job. However, it can also take away some of the freedom as well if you don’t have the self discipline to walk away from your business when it is needed. Having the freedom to set my own schedule and work my own hours has always been my main motivation in starting and running my own online business.

2. FAMILY TIME. I have 3 kids at home and it was always my intention to find some way to make a living while still being able to hang out with my family. Running your own home business can give you that freedom. I get to take my kids to school, pick them up from school, and never miss any of their sports or activities.

3. UNLIMITED INCOME. If you have a j.o.b., you are essentially trading hours for dollars. That’s it. And almost always, you consider yourself as being underpaid. Unfortunately, when you’re working for someone else there is no way around that, ever. With an online business there is literally no limit to the amount of money you make. Really, you end up being paid what you’re worth based on the value you bring to your industry.

4. WORKING WITH COOL PEOPLE. When you’re running your own business, you have a choice as to who you work with. You’re not forced to deal with co-workers that you can’t get along with, you’re not forced to have a boss that just doesn’t like you. You get to work with people that you can actually be productive with. People that are like you. People that have the same goals and dreams as you do. That fact alone is a big reason to do this.

This is my coffee shop desk as it looked while I wrote this blog post on why I run an online business from home.

5. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. When your entire business is an online business, you can be practically anywhere and still run your business. I’ve run my business from hotel rooms, coffee shops, shopping malls, baseball stadiums, airplanes, restaurants, while driving down the highway (in the passenger seat of course;), and even on a ride at Disneyland. With smart phones you don’t even need wifi anymore, the sky’s the limit (literally!). Nobody has to know where you are either, which is part of the package. (Word from the wise: you also have to learn when to turn it all off!)

6. LIFESTYLE.  I suppose this is kind an “all in one” reason. The lifestyle is what you get when you have a successful home business. You’re working your own hours, you’re making good money, you’re dealing with good people, and you have the time freedom to be wherever you want, whenever you want. It’s all part of the lifestyle.

So in a nutshell, those are my main reasons and motivations for doing this online business thing. What are your motivations for doing this? Money? Fame? Fun?

Let me know in your comments!

Thanks,

Geoff Stephen

  1. Yes Geoff, I would say those are probably the top six reasons. Certainly good enough for me.
Joining NPN has opened some new doors for me already, in under a month.

    Many thanks,

  2. Great reasons Geoff but I have one more. In my retirement years I'd like to add to my retirement income and help others realize there is more to life than bowing to an employer, which I had always done. They tell you what hours you'll work, when you can have your vacation, what they'll pay you and even fold the company and leave you high and dry. There's a better way.

  4. Well for me it was all about my kids and family. When I first started all I could think of was how am I going to be able to support my kids and what about my parents when they get old and can't take care of themselves anymore. I wanted a way to put my kids through home school and wanted them to have enough money for college. So that was my #1 reason. Thank god for NPN I can keep my kids in home school now. Thanks Geoff Stephen.

  5. For me, being recently retired, I discovered that I have loads of free time but that my monthly income has been significantly reduced. I have always wanted to have my own business. So, I decided to check out what was available on the Internet that I could do on a part time basis, leaving me time to do the other things that I enjoy doing. I have found that there are a lot of opportunities on the net but, unfortunately, many scams promoted by people primarily interested in lining their own pockets rather than helping you develop a successful online business.

I have found that truly to be successful you have to have a genuine interest in helping people. Who said "if you help enough people get what they want, you'll get what you want"? That's my primary strategy, helping people helping themselves to get what they want.

  6. Good post, sir. It sure cannot just be for the money although it is part of it, but it is not the main part. time with the family is vital. I have seen marriages go by the wayside 'cause they were never home.

  7. I was downs sized and left the company with $57K My co-workers afraid to quit, the following year got laid off with only one year of health insurance. Way back I joined a very popular MLM company AMW… yes, you know the one I' talking about. I sold a few bottles of soap but never maid real money. I did have to wrk 3 part time JOB's just to make ends meet. I continued looking for the right opportunity and found some and I am still making some money.

I can tell you that my main reason why I believe in MLM is that at the time when I was working the three JOB's when ever I got sick and could NOT work I did NOT get paid. Just like people in sales. If they don't make a sale they don't gat paid. Residual income is the best way to make a living. You share the service or product and get paid for the lifetime that the customer orders the product over and over again.

For years my wife and I were the only once bringing home the bacon (money) until we learned about leverage and residual income. Now we have hundreds of people bringing to our home the bacon. The more we share the more people will LOVE to join our team and learn this simple concept of (PHP) people helping people.
GEOFF you are right on! Thank you so much brother.

  8. I been layoff for 3 months now and I have to say honestly IT FEELS GOOD! I'm working on my dream to financial freedom and all the points you made Geoff are on the one. The main points for me are freedom and family time. My 2 sons are grown now and I miss out on their school years because of a JOB. Didn't have the time to go and support them when I wanted too. Today! I feel so motivated to succeed and I believe with Global NPN I'm well on my way.

    Thanks Geoff

  10. Good letter. Can’t wait to be able to spend more time at home to just work on the internet but, I own an industrial embroidery business which I am in the process of selling and then I will be free to do what I really want to do. Unfortunately, the sale may take a few months as the buyer is paying it off and I won’t hand over the business until it is all paid up. So my internet time is literally in the evenings after dinner when I work until about 11pm and then I have had it.

  11. I just love the whole idea of working from home. I don’t have to set the alarm clock I can stay in bed and work if I like, and most importantly I can have a day or week off when ever I like. This truly is the best way to make a living and more.
